Arts & Crafts Show
The Arts and Crafts show, where local artists and craftspeople exhibit and sell their wares, is presented every Sunday along Cabrillo Boulevard near Chase Palm Park, along a one-mile stretch from Stearns Wharf toward East Beach. Show hours are 10 a.m. until sunset. The show is also held on several other days of the year: Memorial Day, July Fourth, Saturday of Fiesta Week, and Labor Day.

Beaches
The Santa Barbara coastline includes dozens of golden sand beaches, perfect for sunbathing, surfing, boogie boarding, wind surfing, kayaking, strolling, volleyball, jogging, and other outdoor activities. Our major beaches include East Beach, Leadbetter Beach, Thousand Steps Beach, Arroyo Burro Beach and Butterfly Beach.

Santa Barbara County Courthouse
1100 block of Anacapa Street, 962-6464. Completed in 1929, this magnificent Spanish-Moorish structure is one of the most beautiful buildings in the U.S. The elegant interior includes hand-painted ceilings, wrought iron chandeliers, giant murals, carved doors, and imported tiles. Open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Stearns Wharf
At the foot of State Street, Stearns Wharf, built in 1872 by John Peck Stearns, is the oldest operating wharf on the west coast. In the l940s Hollywood legend Jimmy Cagney and his brothers William and Edward were part owners of the wharf. Now a Santa Barbara landmark, it offers gifts and souvenir shops, wine tasting, a seafood market where visitors can purchase fresh fish, restaurants, a bait and tackle store, and other small shops.

Yacht Harbor and Breakwater
West Cabrillo Boulevard. Over 1,000 work and pleasure craft rest here. The flag-lined, manmade breakwater (constructed in l924) has a paved walkway offering a 1/2 mile walking tour with harbor, city, and mountain views. Restaurants, shops, and supply stores skirt the perimeter. This is the departure point for shoreline tours and sport fishing excursions boats.

Sea Center
Located on Stearns Wharf, 962-0885. Offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into marine life that inhabits the Santa Barbara Channel. Among the many exciting displays are live marine animals in saltwater tanks and a computer learning center.

Whale Watching
Whales, dolphins, and orcas frolic year-round in the nutrient-rich Santa Barbara Channel, one of the premier whale-watching arenas. The best time of year to see California gray whales is mid-December through the end of April, when nearly 25,000 of the gentle giants swim along the coastline during their annual north-south migrations.

Santa Barbara Zoo
500 Ninos Drive, off Cabrillo Boulevard at East Beach, 962-5339. Once the site of a palatial estate, the zoo is a delightful refuge in a charming garden setting. It offers botanical gardens, over 700 animals from around the world (including big cats, elephants, and giraffes), a new restaurant, spacious picnic area, miniature train, and children's playground. Open daily 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

 Fiesta
If it's August, it must be Fiesta, our traditional high holiday celebrating Santa Barbara's Spanish heritage. Nothing escapes Old Spanish Days. Its history and color penetrates even the most austere corners of the city from breakfast to bedtime for five full days of parades, dances, music and feasts for all.

Summer Solstice
Celebrate the longest day of the year by jumping in line at this charming parade. The theme changes annually, but there's always a workshop beforehand where you can learn to make costumes and decorate floats. The celebration takes place on the Saturday nearest the summer solstice. Botanic Garden
1212 Mission Canyon Road, 682-4726. The garden is devoted entirely to the study of California's native flora. Display areas include the deserts, the Sierra Nevada, the southern mountains, and off-shore islands. More than 5 miles of meandering trails on 65 acres allow visitors a glimpse of cacti, redwoods, wildflowers, and much more. The garden has an excellent library, research facility, gift shop with books, souvenirs, and native plants, and a home demonstration garden.

Parks
Santa Barbara's many beautiful parks are perfect for sports, picnics, and relaxation. Parks can be found all over the city; each has a unique character and offers something special for everyone.

Santa Barbara Film Festival
Premieres and screenings of U.S. and International films are the highlights of the Santa Barbara Film Festival. Gala opening and salute to a star. Workshops and seminars by film professionals. 963-0023. Sometime in March.

Semana Nautica
Santa Barbara's famous multisports festival includes air, sea, and land. Forty events throughout the city to include cardboard kayak races and sandcastle contests.

Santa Barbara County Bowl - Concerts
One of the best concert venues in the country. An intimate amphitheater, it is a pleasure to see some of the biggest names in the music industry play here. For a unique atmosphere, this is the place to see everything from classical music events to rock acts.

Music Academy - Weekend Picnic Concerts
The ten acres of Music Academy gardens are open to picnickers for enjoyment of an early evening picnic followed by a concert that offers a potpourri of musical selections, from solos to ensemble performances, July and August.

Biking
Second only to pedestrian pursuits, bicycling is a pleasurable and still detailed way of seeing what there is to see. Recognizing the affection of residents and visitors for this mode of sport and transport, the city has taken great and costly pains to provide several well-planned and well-mapped bikeways. A Pedal Around Town map, available at bicycle rental shops and the Chamber of Commerce, is the key to the intricacies of these routes.

Hiking
Getting away from it all without going too far is one of the many charms of Santa Barbara. You can pretend that you're hiking in some remote wilderness - and then turn around to take in gorgeous views of the city nestled against the curving coast. There are more than half a dozen accessible trails in Santa Barbara's rugged foothills. The local Sierra Club, with several free public hikes graded for difficulty each week, is a reliable source of information on access and trail conditions. They can be reached at (805) 966-6622.

El Paseo Shopping
El Paseo is a unique, Old Spanish-style shopping arcade which was built around the former residence of the famous De La Guerra family. Built in the early l920's, its architecture represents the beginning of Santa Barbara's Spanish Colonial Revival style. Entrances are located on State, De La Guerra, and Anacapa Streets.

Earl Warren Showgrounds
From rodeos, horse events, BMX to Computer and RV shows - this is Santa Barbara's premiere location for outside events.

El Presidio De Santa Barbara State Historic Park
123 East Canon Perdido Street, 966-9719. Founded in 1782, the Presidio includes buildings which were part of the original Presidio Real, the last Spanish military outpost in California. The Park is open everyday 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is free.

Farmers Market
This colorful outdoor market is where local growers sell fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers, eggs, nuts, honey and other items at reasonable prices. The Market is held at the corner of Santa Barbara and Cota Streets from 8:30 a.m. to noon each Saturday and at the 500 Block of State Street from 3 to 6:30 p.m. each Tuesday evening. There is also one held in Montecito on Coast Village Road on Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon.

Wineries
Enjoy a day in the scenic wine country of Santa Barbara County with its 30 wineries and nearly 10,000 acres of vineyards. Most of the wineries welcome visitors year-round. Many have tasting rooms in which a wide variety of premium wines may be sampled, and some offer tours which explain the wine-making process from vineyard through bottling. Our own Santa Barbara Winery at 202 Anacapa Street, (805) 963-3633, is a small winery dedicated to the production of fine wines made from grapes grown in the western Santa Ynez Valley.

Restaurants
Santa Barbara is a gourmet's destination with a wealth of appealing eateries in every price range. With its ideal climate and fertile soil providing a bounty of fresh produce year-round, local waters that abound in fresh seafood, and its proximity to one of California's most exciting wine regions, no wonder our fair city attracts so many chefs and restauranteurs. From casual California bistro fare to upscale dining or authentic Mexican taquerias, Italian pastas to Spanish tapas, and the multi-cultural influences of fusion cooking, Santa Barbara offers a never-ending feast for the taste buds.

Brinkerhoff Avenue
This charming, one-block street is especially unique because all of the original houses built on the lots still stand, and the avenue has been designated a special historic district by the city of Santa Barbara. Victorian in style, most of the houses are now antique stores or specialty gift shops. The avenue is located within walking distance of downtown Santa Barbara, in the middle of the block bordered by State, West Cota, West Haley, and De La Vina Streets.

Santa Barbara Public Library
Housed in a spacious, two-story, Spanish-style building opposite the Courthouse, 40 East Anapamu Street, the library includes the Faulkner Gallery and Townley Room with displays of works by local artists. For more information call (805) 962-7653

Santa Barbara Mission
2201 Laguna Street, (805) 682-4713. Mission Santa Barbara, the tenth of the California missions founded by the Spanish Franciscans, was established December 4, 1786. Its beautiful setting, unique twin bell towers and lovely facade have earned it the title "Queen of the Missions." The Mission is a Catholic parish church open to the public year round. Visitors can take a self-guided tour through the Mission museum, exotic gardens, courtyards, chapel and cemetery. Open daily from 9 to 5.
